Stone walling finished with mortar

The alternative to a dry-stone wall is to use a lime mortar. This is sometimes more appropriate for a garden wall, particularly when the wall sits alongside a busy road where salts will be thrown up by car tyres on a regular basis. It may also be that you prefer the look of a stone wall which has been pointed with mortar for your garden.

I am experienced in constructing and repairing mortared walls and recommend  a traditional lime mixture for this type of wall.

Benefits of lime-mortar with stone walling

  • Increases life of stonework which is close to a busy road
  • Gives a traditional appearance
  • Flexible – it allows for movement & thermal expansion and so doesn’t cause cracking in stones
  • It draws moisture out of stonework
  • It allows stonework to breathe
  • Does not set too hard but offers strength – again preventing cracking of stones
  • It is fast-setting
  • No risk of salt staining
  • It is an eco-friendly building material
